in india
g'day
well im in india, and im loving it. the plane flights here were horrible. from sydney, we had to fly to melbourne first, then to bangkok which was really annoying. in bangkok we spent a day sight seeing, then we caught the plane to kolcutta and arrived at midnight. from the airport, we went to a hotel and spent 7 hr sleeping. when we got up the same day we went sight seeing, and that city is absoluty crazy. there could not be any more people crammed into that city. the traffic is bad as well. cars honking, lane chaging with out indicating and so on. though is wasnt as bas as bangkok where we spent some time driving on the wrong side of the road... the usual. after out day in culcutta, we took the overnight train up north. this was horrible. there were people snoring, farting, spitting, beggars, people tring to sell coffee. the coffy sellers would walk up and down the train saying "chai coffee coffee chai" or "nescoffee" or "chohate chai coffee". it was chaos, so i slept with one eye open.
then we had the community project. in short, it was mad, we spent 3 days at an exiled tibetan community. the people there were friendly and gretted and treated us well. i spent 3 days, panting and detailing 2 stupas, one of which hols the ashes of the presidents grandfather who was a grat lama. very awe inspiring stuff.
after the community project, we have come to gangtok which is where im at now. gangtok means "hill side" or "hilltop" and it is that indeed. its got great veiws, good markets and it hasd a local community feeling about it all. however, the hotel we're staying in is not that good. the walls r mouldy in places, the bathroom is a bit seedy, the beds are very hard and theres a problem with the hot water.
this pretty much brings me up to now. we have today and tomorrow of sightseeing, hopefully we're gonna go to the institute of tibetology which sounds awesome...heaps of ancient manuscripts and bowls made out of human sculls. then we start out trek where we were meant to finish. this is because of the govt not letting us re enter sikkim. aside from that its all good. i havent gotten dheli belly or n e thin, however the transport is very tough. ill talk about that later.
i hope ausse is good...no fires or n e thin. feel free to post replies n that. ill prolly be able to update when im in darjeeling after the trek. hope every one is well back there. looking forward to seeing u again.
cheers
